MORE INFO

The Superiority of Bulgarian Rose Otto

The Valley of Roses near town of Kazanlak in Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil in the world. The soil and the climate in this region are quite suitable for the roses. The conditions in Kazanlak proved to be more favorable for the rose cultivation than those of Tunisia—the country of origin of the rose. The humidity, cloudiness, and precipitation in May and June contribute to obtaining roses that produce a high percentage of oil.

The Bulgarian roses are inheritors of the so-called Damascena rose, that was brought to the area ages ago from Persia. Bulgarian rose oil is called “the Queen of all essential oils” because it contains more than 300 therapeutic substances. The high-quality Bulgarian rose oil has gained its producers scores of medals and diplomas from many exhibitions and fairs.

To produce one gram of rose oil the distiller must use more than 1,000 rose blossoms! Every flower is picked by hands and preserved carefully for the distillation. It is one of the most expensive oils in the world.

Rose oil can mean either rose otto (attar of rose, attar of roses) or rose absolute and is the essential oil extracted from the petals of various types of roses. Rose otto oils are extracted through steam distillation, while rose absolute oils are obtained through solvent extraction or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. Absolute oils are used more commonly in perfumery. Even with their high price and the advent of organic synthesis, rose oils are still perhaps the most widely used essential oil in perfumery.

Thanks to experience gained during centuries in the brandy production, the Bulgarian rose producers developed the process of rose oil production by the means of double distillation. By doing so, the quantity of the extracted product was increased—producing more oil than producers from Turkey, India, and Morocco—while keeping the fine fragrance and unique qualities of the rose attar.

Still today the Bulgarian rose oil has no competition on quality, and it is a unique component in the recipes of world-famous perfumery companies like Elizabeth Arden, Kenzo, Chanel, Bulgari, Paco Rabanne, and Еstée Lauder.

The main compounds of the Bulgarian rose oil are high alcohols (eleoptens), paraffin hydrocarbons (stearoptens), and many microelements. Their proportion gives the Bulgarian rose oil rich and long-lasting floral aroma.

Called “liquid gold” in its native Bulgaria because it contains more than 300 valuable substances with a marvelous effect over the human body, it is one of the most precious and expensive oils in the world. (Learn more about how it is crafted in our “More Info” section.) Allow this heady scent to elevate you heart and mind, shoring up your spirit with its antidepressant properties. Its therapeutic attributes also help deal with congestion, fever, and sore throats.
